While there are many things romantic comedies get wrong, there’s one cliche I still believe in: the spark.
Sometimes you have it, and other times you really wish you did. The Doctor checked off many of the items on the ideal partner checklist:
- Funny
- Cute
- Smart
- Ambitious
- Punctual
- Chivalrous
- and the list goes on…
Except for one thing, the spark.
We met for dinner. I heard this place had delicious brussel sprouts and I wanted to try them. Plus, the spot was near him. He had just finished his work shift. As I walked in, I bumped into him. A rom-com staple. He was getting seated and I was right in front of him. I turned around and smack!Thankfully his reflexes were on point and no harm was done. We sat down and dove right into conversation. We shared stories about work, favorite pastimes, Hogwarts houses, and affection for those brussel sprouts. They were scrumptious!
I didn’t realize that the restaurant turned into a club after a certain time. As we tried to finish our conversation and drinks, the music went from soft jazz to deafening hip-hop. We darted out of there since neither of us felt like clubbing that night.
We took a stroll downtown and chatted some more about pets and family. It was all really sweet and I really did like him, but no spark.
Someone can check off all the things on a list we think we want, but if there is no spark—I don’t think you can force that. I know some believe in a slow burn. I do too, but I have to feel a flicker on the first date. I see us becoming really good friends. He was a great conversationalist!
Maybe another date would help ignite the spark? I know first dates can be awkward for some.
Yet, when he walked me to my car, I confirmed the lack of spark because I said what I usually reserve for all my friends after we hang out, “Let me know when you get home.” Sure, I say that to partners too, but there’s a slight difference in how I say it.
Hopefully, The Doctor and I can become friends. If not, it’s alright. We will always have those delicious brussel sprouts.
Chances of a second date: ⭐️⭐️/5
